– The suspect was caught engaging in the sale of teaching and learning materials meant for free distribution to schools within the municipality

An official of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in Ho in the Volta region is currently in the grips of the Police after reportedly stealing and selling books meant to be distributed to some public schools. The suspect, Wisdom Atawiah, was arrested last Wednesday for theft and illegal selling of items belonging to the state.

Mr. Atiawah, who serves as the Supply officer at the Ho municipal directorate of the GES, reportedly connived with a shopkeeper in the community, identified as one Newton Fiagbor, to perpetuate the criminal act. Upon their arrest, a search was mounted into the stationery shop, with the police managing to retrieve some of the stolen items, including 536 technical drawing and sketchbooks, 140 pieces of crayons, 171 boxes of white chalk, text books and numerous Longman dictionaries, among others.

The suspect is believed to have sold the items to Mr. Fiagbor at a cut price. Addressing the media on the development, the Volta Regional Police Commander, DCOP Nana Asomah Hineh, said “police intelligence led to the arrest of the storekeeper at Azumah Bookshop, Newton Fiagbor”, who upon interrogation told the police that “the items were given to him by the Supply officer from GES called Wisdom Atawiah”.  According to him, a team of police officers were quickly sent to effect the arrest of the pair upon getting the information of their criminal act. Meanwhile, the suspect Mr. Atawiah has pleaded guilty but explained that he wanted to use the money from the sale of the public items to finance his son’s tertiary education.
